Commit to Memory: “Then Saul gave David his own armour…David put it on,… and took a step or two to see what it was like, for he had never worn such things before. “I can’t go in these,” he protested to Saul. “I’m not used to them.” So David took them off again. He picked up five smooth stones from a stream and put them into his shepherd’s bag. Then, armed only with his shepherd’s staff and sling, he started across the valley to fight the Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:38-40 NLT)
Competence is heart work to be the best around in whatever you do. It is that ability to do something successfully or efficiently. It is a spirit and I tell you when the spirit of competence is at work , whatever you touch turns gold.
It was Solomon that explained to us that one way you can get your life in order and on course and that early is to be competent in all you do and in that which your hand finds doing. How? It is the desire to be competent that will cause you to strive for diligence in all your endeavours. Solomon puts it this way in Proverbs 22:29 MSG
“Observe people who are good at their work- skilled workers are always in demand and admired; they don’t take a backseat to anyone.”
This is the word of the wisest and wealthiest man in Bible history and really there is more to learn here. God wants you to be competent- that is good enough , be the best and beat the best in whatever your hands find doing or whatsoever field or career line you have chosen or settled for. When you are competent, you will be diligent, smart working, committed and focused on your goals. And the truth is that whenever the Lord finds a man of these traits, His favour is shown and his hands of blessings are stretched towards such a fellow.
Beloved, there is a Spirit of competence that comes upon a man to perform his enterprise and deliver dumbfounding results. This explains why when Saul learnt David was bold enough to challenge Goliath in battle, he gave David his armour to put on to fight Goliath but as captured in our commit to memory, David did not use it. Why? He was not trained with them. He said to Goliath you come against me with physical weapons but I come against you in the name of the Lord whom you have defiled. What was it that fuelled the audacity of David? It was competence that had its roots in God’s dependency. Hallelujah.
Reflection: If you must go far and rise in stardom, competence is inevitable.
