Commit to Memory: “[And it is, indeed, a source of immense profit, for] godliness accompanied with contentment (that contentment which is a sense of inward sufficiency) is great and abundant gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and obviously we cannot take anything out of the world; But if we have food and clothing, with these we shall be content (satisfied).” [1 Timothy 6:6-8 AMPC]
Beloved, if you are contented you will make more impact than you currently do at the moment. If you are contented you will see the reason to appreciate whatever gift or talent that you possess, sharpen and polish it to the best of your ability and maximize it for the profit of the Kingdom.
In the words of Paula Rollo “Contentment does not mean I desire nothing but rather it’s the simple decision to be happy with what I have.” Do you desire a life overflowing in fulfilment and lasting joy, then embrace contentment. Anytime you show an attitude of contentment, what you are actually saying is that “My God I am satisfied and privileged with what you have given me and by extension you attract more pleasantness of His blessings.” See the demerits of covetousness in 1 Timothy 6:9 AMPC. It says:
“But those who crave to be rich fall into temptation and a snare and into many foolish (useless, godless) and hurtful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction and miserable perishing.”
Contentment means to be self sufficient in God’s dependence. It’s an attitude and expression of rest and peace that comes from being right with God and knowing that He is the centre of all that concerns and happens to us.
To understand contentment, you need to know the perils that covetousness could bring. The opposite of contentment is covetousness. To be covetous is to love something to the point that you compromise your integrity and smear your conscience with hot iron. We see this exhibited by Gehazi in 2 kgs 5:26-27. Covetousness brought him the leprosy of Naaman. Covetousness for the desirable makes a person despise the available as seen in the life of Samson (Judges 14:3). Covetousness is lust for that which belongs to another man such that you detest your own. If you must go far and beyond landing safely on time in the fulfilment of your destiny then you must learn to be contented with whatever God has blessed you with. So Friends, decide today to be contented and see your life soaring from glory to glory.
Reflection: If you appreciate your skills, gifts and talents and decide to be at best in them, then jealousy of things over others and their gifting will die by default in you.
